When I was young, I was really into collecting rocks.
Everywhere I went, I was on the hunt for any rock with a funny shape, interesting texture, or cool pattern.
Dirt roads, beaches, or even the pebble landscaping around stores drew my attention.
Agates were the most prized rocks to find, of course.
And in all my hunting, I would always carry this dream of finding the BIGGEST, MOST AMAZING AGATE EVER!!!
If I could only get that agate, then my quest would be complete.
Well, I never found it...
But searching for that agate has helped me understand St. Peter a little deeper.
St. Peter was a fisherman. And I bet, day after day, he carried around the secret hope of landing the BIGGEST, MOST AMAZING CATCH EVER!!
That glorious catch would set him up for life with prestige and comfort.
Then one day, after an entire night of not catching anything, it happened.
A strange man told him to cast his net one more time (which was a rather ridiculous idea) and then BOOM!
All his fishing dreams were fulfilled to their full measure.
And, in that moment...St. Peter didn't care about the fish at all.
Through the fish, St. Peter discovered God.
He discovered that God knew him.
He discovered that God was calling him.
He discovered that God had more for him.
St. Peter could have turned away and settled for a good fishing story.
Then maybe you'd discover him in a bar 30 years later telling that fishing story again.
Instead St. Peter immediately let go of the fish and held on to Jesus, and now he is the Rock of the church where billions have received the life of God within them.
Will you let go?
Will you let God draw you into the strange adventure of salvation?
Or will you turn away and hold on to the fading glories of this world?
There is hope that does not disappoint.
There is a true prize worth selling everything else for.
It's time for an adventure.
Let's be Saints,
Isaac
